Kazimar Periya Pallivasal or Kazimar Big Mosque is the oldest mosque of Madurai, built by Kazi Syed Tajuddin in 1284 AD. The descendant of the Islamic prophet, Mohammed, Kazi brought the land from Maravarman Kulasekara Pandyan I to construct the mosque. After Kazi, the mosque is being managed by his successors to date.
The mosque also has the Dargah of prominent Hazrats of Madurai and houses the Madurai Maqbara. The Kazi Syed Tajuddin Arabi Madrasasah inside the mosque imparts Arabic lessons to more than 100 students. This religious place is also known for its amazing architecture and is just 800 meters away from the much-famed Madurai Meenakshi temple.
Every year, the mosque celebrates its Founders Day (Urus anniversary of Kazi Syed Tajuddin) with great pomp and fervour on the 15th of Rajab (The seventh month of the Islamic calendar).
