Situated on the banks of river Vaigai, Madurai district is primarily famous for Sri Meenakshi Sundareshwarar Temple. Melur, Vadipatti, Thirumangalam, Thirupparankundram, Peraiyur and Usilampatti are some of the main towns in the district which is a hub for film shootings. Alanganallur, Palamedu and Avaniyapuram in the district are popular for Jallikattu.

National Highway 45 and 45B connects Madurai to Chennai. Madurai can be reached from Bengaluru via NH 49.
Madurai has three bus terminals - M.G.R. Bus Stand (Mattuthavani), Arappalayam (for inter city buses) and Periyar Bus Stand (for intra city buses).
