Known for the brilliant sculptures and mandapams, the temple is situated in a beautiful spot, surrounded by hills and greenery. Legend has it that Lord Vishnu came here to give away Goddess Meenakshi to Lord Sundareswarar in marriage. A stupendous tower welcomes the devotees at the entrance.
The mandapam and the exquisite pillars leave one in awe. The famous Chithirai festival held in April/May is a spectacle to watch. It is marked by a grand procession of the deity for the holy dip in Vaigai river. The colourful festival attracts people from various parts of the state. The pillars of mandapam are the finest specimens of Nayaka art. Carvings related to mythologies are displayed here.
Life size sculptures of old rulers are another attraction. Idols of Narasimha, Krishna and Rathi seated on a parrot stand testimony to the brilliant workmanship. The temple also showcases inscriptions of various dynasties. The float festival in February/March, the navarathri festival in September/October and Vaikunta Ekadasi during December/January are the famous festivals celebrated here.
