The Viralimalai Bird Sanctuary is a natural sanctuary for peacocks [India’s national bird] which roam freely around the temple of Lord Murugan. There are six species of peacocks and a population of around 500 of these birds spread out all over. The temple priests feed the peacocks every day, and hence they turn up in large numbers. It is said that the peacocks here identify the yogi rocks and perform their magnificent dance or shed feathers only on these.
