When it was first organized in 1992, the festival was called the Mamallapuram Dance Festival; afterwards, it was renamed as the Indian Dance Festival. Famous professional classical dance performers from all over India gather to perform at this premier event. The Department of Tourism, Government of Tamil Nadu, organizes the festival every year. 

Traditional folk art forms such as Mayilattam, Karagam, Kavadi, Thappattam and Oyilattam, as well as classical arts such as Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi and Kathak will be featured at the festival. This festival celebrates the glory of various dance forms and instills a seed of passion in all who join. Be ready to get enchanted by the enthralling performances of veteran artists in a romantic setting. 

The festival is held in the vicinity of "The Arjuna Penance," a historic sculpture at the Shore Temple that traces its origins back to the mid-seventh century. It is one of the city's most marvelous monuments. Every evening, prominent artists from across the country take the stage to bestow an electrifying experience for the audience.
