Known as the Turmeric City or Yellow City, Erode was part of Coimbatore till it was renamed. Located on the banks of the mighty Bhavani and Cauvery rivers, it is among the largest producers of turmeric and has earned a GI tag. Erode is also a large producer of plantain, coconuts and white silks.
This district is also famous for its handloom, power loom and readymade garments. Fabrics and rugs made in Erode are famous throughout India, and it has a large export market as well. Known for its bed sheets, cotton saris, dhotis, lungis, towels, carpets and printed fabrics it is also called the Texvalley of India or the Loom City of India.
The name Erode is believed to have its origin from EeruOdai, meaning two streams. It has two water courses in its vicinity – the Perumpallam and the Kalingarayan Canal.
There are temple inscriptions which indicate the prominence of this place as early as the 10th Century. Its name is also said to mean Wet Skull and has been associated with a Chola temple.
Situated 40 kms from Erode, the Magudeswarar temple is also known as Trimurthy Kovil, as it houses the shrines of Lord Shiva [known as Makuteswarar], Lord Vishnu [known as Veeranarayana Perumal] and Lord Brahma. It contains 7 main shrines and is connected to sage Agastya. Due to the temple’s associations with Pandya kings, it is also called Tiruppandikodumudi. It is one of the most important temples in the region.
This dam was constructed by the Mysore Maharaja in the 17th Century. It has two channels called as “ArakkanKottai Channel” and “Thadapalli Channel”. It is 60 kms from Coimbatore.
This place houses the KondathuKaliamman Temple &Amarapaneeswarar temple dedicated to Lord Siva, and the Adinarayanasamy Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
