Hemmed in by the hills and lush green forest, Papanasam waterfalls drop down from a height of 120 m. This originates from the river Thamirabharani which flows along the Western Ghats towards the plains of Papanasam. Papanasam translates as annihilation of sins. It is believed that a dip in the holy water here will absolve you of all the sins.
The natural beauty and the beliefs surrounding this place make it a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims. A 3 km trek leads you to Papanasam waterfalls. Being close to the forests, tourists get to spot wild animals most often and the place is located near the Kalakad Mundanthurai tiger reserve. The place is abound in legends.
It is believed that when Sage Agastya could not witness the divine wedding of Shiva and Parvathi due to a huge gathering, he prayed to get a view. Moved by his piety, the lord appeared in front of him with Parvathi in the marriage wear and the place came to be known as Papanasthar. The holy nature of the place and the scenic splendor make it an all time favourite.
