Speak of South India’s top wildlife sanctuaries and the Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve would find a spot up there for sure. Be it the breathtaking beauty of the forest land that it is a part of or the variety of wildlife species that adorn this region, the sanctuary is an experience like few others. The second largest wildlife sanctuary in Tamil Nadu, the Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve is spread across a whopping area of 895 sq. km. 

Nestling in the serene shades of the majestic Western Ghats, the Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve was established in the year of 1988. A tropical wet evergreen forest, this sanctuary is situated in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. The spectacles of this special zone are many, the most important being the flora and fauna that fills this area. The animals you could come across in this region include the Tiger, Leopard, Sambar, Indian Pangolin, Sloth, Mouse Deer, Flying Lizard and so on, apart from reptiles such as King Cobra, Python, Pit Viper and Monitor Lizard. The birds that feely fly around the sanctuary include the Great Indian Hornbill, Grey Headed Bulbul, Oriental Bay Bowl, Great Pied Hornbill, Broad tailed Grass warbler and thus goes the list. To add to the beauty, you can also find over 150 species of plants in the sanctuary. 

Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve is also a fine destination for trekking that can be undertaken with prior permission. The very experience of guided trekking through these forests will for sure be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
