Be it for a leisurely stroll, or to spend a beautiful evening in the company of family or friends, here is a beach that provides the ideal ambiance for it. Edward Elliot’s Beach or Elliot’s beach as it is popularly known is one of Chennai’s favourite hangout spots. One of the cleanest and most pristine beaches in South India, the Elliot’s beach is located in Besant Nagar, one of the bustling neighbourhoods of Chennai. For this reason, the beach is also often referred to as the Besant Nagar Beach.
No trip to Chennai is considered complete without a visit to the Elliot’s Beach. Such is the charm these sands and waves exude. The beach is named after Edward Francis Elliot, a chief magistrate and superintendent of police from the British days in the region. One of the major landmarks of the beach is the Karl Schmidt Memorial, erected in the memory of a Dutch Sailor who sacrificed his life while trying to save a girl from drowning. The Elliot’s Beach is the end-point of the Marina Beach Shore and is one of the most idyllic spots in the city. Though located close to the city centre, this beach isn’t overcrowded on most days; a factor that lets you enjoy the beauty of the deep blue sea and the splendid sands. There are many activities that you can enjoy on the shore including horse riding and checking out the delicacies around.
Also, the beach is located pretty close to various tourist attractions that Chennai has in store.
